EXTRAORDINARY OLYMPIC ACTIVITIES AND ITS EXTENSIVE RANGE
PDF Tlač Email

At the beginning of its existence, SOC achieved a big respect for Slovakia via its extensive range of Olympic activities that form an important part of the Olympic Movement. Before the origin of SOC, they were covered by the Olympic Society of Slovakia. We can say that SOC gained the highest international recognition particularly in the sphere of the development of Olympism. Via a large and mixed network of civil associations, constituents and commissions of SOC, Olympism and all it embodies is disseminated among general public and appeals to the youth. This way the mission of SOC has been accomplished.

In March 2001, the SOC Council for Development of Olympism was established - a body coordinating Olympic activities of all members, constituents and commissions of SOC towards the development of Olympism and Olympic ideas and fulfilment of social tasks of SOC. It coordinates the activities of independent organisations - legal entities that are members of SOC (Slovak Association of Olympians, Slovak Society of Olympic and Sports Philately, Slovak Society of Olympic and Sports Symbolics and Kalokagathia in Slovakia), entities without a legal personality (Slovak Olympic Academy, Fair Play Club of SOC and Association of Olympic Clubs of the SR) as well as respective SOC commissions (SOC Commission for Sport and Environment and SOC Commission for Women and Sport).

OLYMPIC CLUBS

A unique network of Olympic Clubs has developed in Slovakia, today we have sixteen of them. The first OCs were formed by enthusiasts of Olympic ideas already before the origin of SOC. All Olympic Clubs are legal entities. Together they founded an association through which they communicate with SOC. The clubs have developed Olympism in regions significantly and with the help of prominent personalities linked to sport, and they closely co-operate with other members, constituents and commissions of SOC.

FAIR PLAY CLUB OF SOC

The work of the Fair Play Club of SOC (FPC SOC) gained an international recognition long ago. The club takes care of the promotion and development of ideas of fair play in sport as well as in life and selects laureates for the award for exemplary acts and long-term activities in the spirit of fair play. FPC SOC was awarded a certificate of merit by the European Fair Play Movement as the first national Fair Play Club in Europe. In 2001, the club together with SOC hosted the 7th Congress of the European Fair Play Movement and the European Fair Play Conference in Bratislava. This event at which a lot of prominent sports personalities took part ranks among the most important events organised by SOC during its whole existence.

SLOVAK SOCIETY OF OLYMPIC AND SPORTS PHILATELY

The Slovak Society of Olympic and Sports Philately (SSOSP) is also held in high esteem. Its members are regularly among the prize-winners at traditional world exhibitions OLYMPHILEX that take place within OG, and on top of that they have developed a range of activities aimed at general public. These include regular national philatelist exhibitions with international participation SLOVOLYMFILA as well as publishing of a number of philatelist materials and catalogues. SSOSP also organised youth philatelist exhibition EYODFILA on the occasion of Winter European Youth Olympic Days in Poprad - Tatry in 1999.

SLOVAK SOCIETY OF OLYMPIC AND SPORTS SYMBOLICS

The Slovak Society of Olympic and Sports Symbolics (SSOSS) was established at the end of 2008, uniting collectors of Olympic and sports pins, badges, etc. Very fast the SSOSS prepared its first international exhibition.

SLOVAK OLYMPIC ACADEMY

From its very origin in 1993, the Slovak Olympic Academy (SOA) has had rich scope of activities. Its results include, for example, regular knowledge competitions for pupils and students, various seminars, related proceedings and other publications, especially about eminent Olympic personalities from Slovakia. SOA organises trips to the venues of the Olympic Games, knowledge competition finals for elementary school pupils as well as international children Olympic camps. In 1994, SOA organised an opinion poll on the most successful Slovak Olympian ever. The winner was athlete Jozef Pribilinec, second and third places took figure skater Ondrej Nepela and cyclist Anton Tkáč. Since 2009 also Cultural Commission (for many years working separately) became part of SOA.

SLOVAK ASSOCIATION OF OLYMPIANS

The Slovak Association of Olympians grouping active participants of Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games began its activities in 2000. The most visible result of SAO activities is the organisation of social gatherings of Slovak Olympians. They take place every year.

COMMISSIONS OF THE OLYMPISM DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

The Olympism Development Council also covers the work of specialised commissions created to supplement existing Olympic activities. They were gradually established by SOC to ensure further development in this sphere. The structure of this area has been changed several times over recent years. At present, the following commissions are active: Commission for Women and Sport and Commission for Sport and Environment. The main activity of the Commission for Women and Sport is the project „Change Your Lifestyle". The SOC Commission for Sport and Environment (before Ecological Commission) prepares conferences, professional seminars and publications, and alongside these, it significantly contributes in the organisation of National Days of Clean Playgrounds and Leisure Facilities, planting of trees or in the realisation of the project „Athletes Help to the High Tatras".

EVENTS PROMOTING THE OLYMPISM

KALOKAGATHIA. The Slovak Olympic Committee repeatedly took part in organising important events for masses. Traditionally it helps to the organisers of the International Olympics of Children and Youth under the name Kalokagathia that are regularly held in Trnava. At present, the main organiser of this event, which already has its winter variant, is the civil Kalokagathia in Slovakia. This association is a member of SOC.

SPORT AND OLYMPIC IDEAS DAYS. Already in 1991, the Olympic Society of Slovakia began to organise Sport Day that was gradually transformed into annual Days of Sport and Olympic Ideas held in the entire Slovakia. SOC continued to organise these days for further years. The organisation Sport Days was later taken over by the Association of Sport for All. After some time, this event ended. However, in the nineties of the last century it was one of the most significant events in the organisation of which SOC participated.

MESSAGE FROM SLOVAKIA TO OLYMPIC ATHENS. With the aim to effectively contribute to Olympic education in the European Year of Education trough Sport, SOC prepared a spectacular all-year project „Message from Slovakia to Olympic Athens" in 2004. Within this project, a number of sports and cultural activities, with the participation of the entire Slovak Olympic Movement, took place in all regions of Slovakia.

OLYMPIC DAY RUN. The Olympic Day Run (ODR) announced by IOC all over the world is the most important event the main organiser of which is SOC. From the half of the 90-ties, it always takes place in June (June 23rd is the Olympic Day because IOC was founded on that day in 1894). Every year ten thousands of people of all ages take part in ODR in many regions of Slovakia. During this event, they participate in the run, but also in other sports and cultural activities. Towns and villages as well as regional Olympic clubs are important partners of SOC in organising this event. However, other sectors of the Olympic movements also help to prepare various events within ODR.

OLYMPIC FESTIVALS OF SLOVAK YOUTH AND CHILDREN. The Olympic Festival of Slovak Children and Youth (OFDMS) is a new project of the SOC launched in 2008 under the patronage od Slovak Republic President Mr. Ivan Gašparovič. OFDMS is organized troughout entire Slovakia in close cooperation of SOC with Ministery of Education of SR, Association of Cities and Villages of Slovakia, Association of Slovak Regions SK8 and Slovak Association of School Sports. There are four age groups of OFDMS, it means children from 3 until 18 years are involved to the physical activities connected with cultural and educational activities.
